Chapter Nineteen

Fuckin’ fuck.

How could this evening have turned around on him? Owen had gone to sleep happy. Now he was on the way to the hospital. He’d called Jeff to let him know what was going on, but told him to stay home so he could get some sleep for the interviews tomorrow. Jeff hadn’t argued. Not that Owen had expected him to, because if it had been Owen, he would have flipped over and went right back to sleep.

Maybe this would be the break they needed. The kidnapper might not have been caught, but he could have messed up. In the perp’s rush, maybe he’d left some DNA behind. Owen wanted this to be over with. One body was enough. He wanted to find the other girls, fast, before the bodies started to pile up.

Time was ticking away. How many more women would be taken and terrified? How was the kidnapper treating them? He worried on that a lot. They still didn’t have the forensic evidence back. Hollywood made it all look so easy. It didn’t work that way in real life. Hopefully they would have something tomorrow, but he wasn’t holding his breath. His case wasn’t the only one that needed evidence from the lab. If they caught another body, it might move them up the list, but there was no guarantee.

Owen parked in the lot and went to the front desk to find out where the latest victim was being treated. He flashed his badge and was happy to hear she wasn’t in ICU. At least she was lucky enough to have escaped the fate of the others. He hoped she knew how lucky she really was.

When he reached the room, there was an officer sitting outside the door. Owen flashed his badge and went to the door of the room to see Harrison perched on the edge of the bed.

“Hello.” Owen knocked on the door frame. He didn’t want to startle them by just walking in.

Harrison stood and moved toward him. “Hey, I was just telling Kiki you would be here soon. She woke up a few minutes ago.” Harrison turned to the woman. “Kiki Smith, this is Detective Owen Carpenter. He’ll take your statement.”

“You aren’t a cop?” she said to Harrison.

“No, I’m the one who found you.” Harrison’s voice was gentle, like he didn’t want to freak her out.

She started to cry. Her whole body shook. Owen hated to see her cry. It made him think of his sister and niece. The predator needed to be caught. Just seeing this woman break down had him thinking of the other women and what they were enduring.

“Hey now, it’ll be okay. You’re safe.” Harrison moved back to the bed.

Harrison sat on the only chair in the room, but it was close to Kiki. He had a hand on the mattress, but he wasn’t touching the victim. Owen thought she would shatter right there, but she seemed to pull herself together.

“Sorry. Sorry.” Kiki buried her head in her hands.
